Am I the only baseball fan around here that's ambivalent about spring training starting? Every year up until now I've yearned for the end of the Dark Time. I started counting the days till pitchers and catchers in about mid-November. But this year I'm almost dreading it.

The combination of the Phillies winning the World Series [it still boggles my mind to write that], the advent of the mighty MLB channel, and the fact that we have XM Radio in the Subaru (our road-trip car) has meant that we have been absolutely wallowing in Phillies off-season coverage since November. And it has been heavenly. And now in 4 days, that inexorable process that once filled me with hope every year will start again. But now I'm not filled with hope, because if they win again in 2009 it just won't be the same. Don't get me wrong - it would be grrreatt! But it won't be the same. It's like the Red Sox's 2007 WS win, which was great and the fans were thrilled. But it wasn't like 2004. I've loved living in this dreamy twilight time in between seasons where all the advertising shows Brad Lidge after that last strikeout.

We made it to the top of the mountain. And now the only way to go is down. I know many other fans (like the ones I live with) who are pure baseball fans and for whom the beginning of spring training is as much a harbinger of spring as the first robin. Baseball, in all its glory and muddleheadedness, is what counts. Not particularly the Phillies or the Red Sox. But for me, it's all about the Phillies. And I'm feeling a little bittersweet.

I know what you're feeling. Once the season starts at the beginning of April (or the end of March, or whenever it is), the world championship is up for grabs and it's not just the Phillies anymore. Brad and Ryan and Chase and Jamie are back in it with those Mets and the damn Yankees and everybody else. But still - there's no game like baseball and nothing like a baseball season, and that's what'll start over again. We can't be selfish and hog the whole thing, much as we'd like to. So, pull yourself together, Momogus, and smile when Bud Selig says "Play Ball" or whatever it is that Bud Selig might say. It's baseball time again!

You really must pull out of this slump. My husband and I have been waiting and counting days for our Brewers to get back into action. I don't know if their season will be that great, but one never knows. And we wouldn't mind if the Brewers were the World Series winner one of these years. We have already been deciding which games we think we want to try to get tickets for to make the trip from Green Bay to Milwaukee. I'll be checking back to see if you're making progress toward getting back in the swing of things!

GG - I'm trying not to be all hoggy with my World Series love. But it's hard letting it go!!

Sandy - I never thought I'd say it, but Spring Training is much more fun when your team didn't win the World Series. I actually miss that sense of renewed hope!! But I'll trade that for a year for that ring.

Go mighty Brewers!!

What the heck are you talking about? With the number of players who had relative "off years" last season, I'm looking forward to 98 wins and another title run. The trophy stays.
